GOAL

The goal was to make it easier for

groups of friends to be together

by watching TV shows and movies together.

I had my teammates Nate O’Loughlin and

Tiago McGrath to help achieve this goal.

Planning

During the planning process my team played with different programs we could use to dictate how our project could unfold. We went with google excel sheets for synthesizing data. We used Miro for detailing the schematics of the project. We used Figma for the actual execution of our project.

Research

Nate handled the competitve analysis and user interviews. Tiago and I handled the user surveys and I handled comparative analysis.

User Surveys

I sent a link on Reddit to a subreddit (forums on Reddit) called r/samplesize...and a couple of family members. Tiago sent the survey link to a few discord servers. Between the two of us

we got 29 responses which I was happy about that. I love doing user surveys because you can get a large sample of people in a short amount of time which in our case was valuable.

Overall, the survey data can be summed up as follows:

Users see watching TV and movies together as a social experience centered around discussion, shared reactions, and connection with friends.

However, the experience is often hindered by scheduling conflicts, distractions, spoilers, and varying levels of viewer engagement.

Netflix is the primary streaming platform used by nearly all participants, suggesting strong platform familiarity and adoption across the audience.

User Interviews

With the user interviews I discussed amongst my teammates what information from our user interviews was helping within the scope of our project.

Notable information from the interviews includes but isn't limited to:

Watchers Communicating when characters in movies did something funny, or were scared;

Primarily using Netflix and Hulu;

Experiencing lack of engagement from all parties when watching content.

Competitive Analysis

In the competitive analysis it was best for us to go for name brands such as Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon because these are companies biggest competitors.

Comparative Analysis

I was also responsible for conducting the comparative analysis. I researched 34 companies, but only used a handful of companies’ info for comparative analysis. This is because a lot of different companies have similar features.

Low Fidelity Sketches

For the sketches, I made different features for different types of devices. I have a calendar, which can be used on any device. I sketched a process through which a user could select movies on desktop. I sketched a process for how a host could share a movie with friends and family. I also sketched the process of organizing a group of friends to watch a movie for the mobile.

User Personas

There wasn't one specific person who came up with the user personas. We all agreed upon the descriptions and pictures and the names.

Home Screen

I had a graphic design background before coming into the UX field, so I have a certain eye for aesthetics. This leads into work I did for some of the Netflix Screens. With the screeens we worked on I added a lot of the pictures some of the screens we used for Netflix. On the home screen, I added a background picture and decreased the saturation to zero to make it black and white.

Social Screen

I adjusted the saturation and made the social screen b&w as well. I also made the icons for the home screen. I also picked out the background picture for the social circle screen.

Final Product

The process of going from starting the watch party to organizing said watch party is somewhat lengthy, but straightforward. You start off selecting your movie, then put in all the details for your party.
